Look after facts, you’ll miss them when they’re gone

If you have another approximately 18 minutes of attention in you for today, please watch this TED talk by Carole Cadwalladr. She is an award-winning investigative journalist and was part of uncovering the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica scandal. In her talk she describes the dire reality of the Digital Coup that we are witnessing in the United States right now and that—thanks to onbounded reach of tech oligarchs like Facebook/Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter/X’s Elon Musk—has implications for the entire world:

This Putin’s playbook. He allows a business elite to make untold riches in exchange for absolute loyalty. Some people are calling this oligarchy. But it’s actually bigger than that. These are global platforms. It’s a [Tech-]broligarchy. There is an alignment of interests that runs through Silicon Valley to, what is now becoming, autocracy. It’s a type of power that the world has never seen before.

Everything she describes resonates deeply with me, and it is why I am trying avoid and speak up against the omnipresence of Surveillance Capitalism more nowadays. It is one of the reasons I am here, putting up blog posts again. Because »we are not powerless«.
